Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws to give them an attractive look. However, you'll have to attach them separately if your new handle does not already have them.
Remove the handle that was previously used
The door handle is not just a decorative feature for your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes your door handle can lose its grip, become loose, or appear old and worn out. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace the door handle.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious problem since you won't be in a position to lock or unlock the door and put you and your family at risk.
Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially when your children or elderly family members struggle to open it, and get trapped in the. Luckily, it's quite simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the old one.
Modern door handles are typically standard sizes and should be able to fit any door. If you're not certain if the new door handle you are buying will work, take out the old one and take measurements of its holes in the housing. This will enable you to buy the right size door handle.
The easiest method to take off the handle from your door is to take it off of the door itself. Usually, a screwdriver is used. Some door handles have an enclosure plate that hides the screws that mount them. You'll need to remove it to get to the screws. After removing the old handle, take note of the way in which the spindle has been connected. This will assist you in aligning the new handle.
You can also remove the door handle by removing the latch mechanism. This is typically done with an screwdriver however you'll need to find the small latch, which is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take off the handle and the strike plate. Then, remove the latch from the door's edge.
Removing the Strike Plate
If you are replacing the handle, you'll need to replace the latch plate, which is the hole that the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The packaging that the new handles are packaged in will include two different latch plates: either a rectangular or circular (see the above diagram that outlines door handle parts). If your current latch plate is rectangular in shape, swap it over to the circular one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a way that makes the handle easier to use.
The first step is to remove the screw holding the latch plate. The screws can be very tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you can, it might be beneficial to have a second person assist with this part.
The latch plate should be removed from the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move, use a small nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes open the plate.
You can now move on to preparing the new door strike plate for installation. Screw the latch plate into the door jamb using the screws that came with the new handles. Do not tighten the screws too much as this could cause damage to the strike plate.
If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, shut and then open the door to check whether it locks and closes properly. If not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, or forward or back until the door locks correctly.
If the door is still jiggling or moving, you may need to enlarge the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too shallow, the wrong size latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure as adjusting the strike plate, using a metal file instead of a chisel and hammer.
Take off the Latch
The latch is the angled metal piece that slides between the hole on the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also catches an opening in the door's frame so that the door is closed. If your door shakes when you close it, replacing the latch could be the only thing needed to fix the issue.
It's difficult to see the screws that hold the latch to the door, but there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver and pry it off. After removal of the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle in position.
If the latch is not easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the that the latch and handle begin to separate. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch is loose enough to let it out.
Once the old latch is removed it should be possible to move the new latch into the slot without difficulties. Make sure that the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers and then use your new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.

Before you install the new handle, make certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is in line with this measurement.
You'll need a new cylinder for your lock if replacing the handle and latch or your existing one is damaged. If you're not switching locks the new lock will fit inside your existing recess, and work with your existing keys.
